Sayyid Al-Hakeem Discusses Political Developments, Iraq’s Economic Challenges with EU Ambassador
His Eminence Sayyid Al-Hakeem, Head of the National State Powers’ Alliance, met in H.E. office in Baghdad on Monday evening, 26 January 2026, the Ambassador of the European Union Mission to Iraq, H.E. Mr. Clemens Smetaner.
During the meeting, they reviewed the latest political developments in Iraq and the region, along with bilateral relations between Iraq and the European Union and the overall situation across the region. H.E. underlined the significance of the European Union for Iraq, given the longstanding ties between Iraq, the EU, and its member states.
H.E. pointed out that Iraq remains open to all in the context of its foreign relations, in a way that safeguards its interests and sovereignty, stressing that this balanced openness reflects a strategic choice that serves the national interest.
H.E. stated that Iraq is witnessing an unprecedented level of political, social, and security stability, calling for sustaining this stability, protecting it, and turning it into lasting stability, while emphasizing the collective responsibility to preserve and strengthen it.
H.E. further explained that the main challenge confronting Iraq is economic, particularly the need to diversify income sources, stimulate productive sectors, and capitalize on Iraq’s economic capabilities, highlighting the importance of practical approaches to addressing this challenge.
